Specifications: 2009 Ducati 1198S Superbike

2009 Ducati 1198S Superbike

The 'S' sets the standard for lightweight performance. On any sport or race bike, the most effective area to reduce weight is its 'unsprung weight'. These are components like tyres, brakes and wheels. Lighter wheels have a lower 'moment of inertia' that is beneficial with every direction change and application of the brakes. The 1198 S addresses this important area by mounting new 7-spoke GP replica Marchesini forged and machined wheels. Both front and rear are super lightweight and their benefit is immediately apparent. The weight saving is further enhanced with the application of a carbon fibre front fender.

The 1198 S is supplied with the Ducati Data Analysis (DDA) and Ducati Traction Control (DTC) systems as standard equipment. The DDA package enables the retrieval and analysis of data collected from your previous track session or road trip. DTC monitors front and rear wheel speeds to detect rear wheel-spin under acceleration and electronically reduces engine power to restore traction.

The new 1198 Testastretta Evoluzione engine
The Testastretta Evoluzione engine is the crowning glory of Ducati's development and perfection of the L-Twin engine. World Superbike dominance for almost two decades is the result of continual commitment to their twin-cylinder configuration. Ducati now share the reward for that commitment as World Championship-winning technologies flow from the factory race team into production engines.
The incredible 1198 and 1198 S are powered by a liquid cooled, L-Twin, Desmodromic engine that produces 170hp (125kW) @ 9,750rpm and a class-beating 97lb-ft (13.4kgm) of torque @ 8,000rpm.
The 1198 achieves its new capacity by using exactly the same 106x67.9 bore and stroke as the factory race bike. Volumetric efficiency through the four valves per cylinder has been enhanced by increasing the valve diameters approximately 4% to 43.5mm for the inlet and 35.5mm for the exhaust. They are actuated by racing-type rocker arms, 'super-finished' for reduced friction and fatigue, and double overhead camshafts with radical profiles that achieve approximately 10% more lift than their predecessors.
The 1198 and 1198 S feature a beautiful and efficient exhaust system. Incredibly lightweight, it has been engineered with a power-increasing symmetrical 2-1-2 layout that uses 52mm-57mm diameter tubing with a wall thickness of 0.8mm (.030in). It is equipped with a catalytic converter and two lambda probes for smooth engine mapping and Euro3 conformity. The system terminates with Ducati's trademark twin under-seat silencers, delivering that unmistakable signature sound of the big bore Desmo 90° L-Twin.

BMW S1000RR 2009 Superbike Motorcycle

2009 BMW S1000RR Superbike

The German marque is diving into the superbike realm with the all-new 2009 BMW S1000RR.
Details are hard to come by at this time, but the new uberbike is a 1000cc Inline-Four with hich the Bavarian firm will contest the 2009 World Superbike Championship.
In a speech delivered April 16th in Munich, BMW Motorrad President, Hendrick von Kuenheim explained the new S1000RR as one part of an ambitious goal by BMW to increase motorcycle sales "by approximately 50 percent by the year 2012 to 150,000 units."
Road racing and a true sportbike in the form of the S1000RR are one part of the growth equation, the other part is expected from a bigger share of the enduro market through the recent acquisition of Husqvarna.
But back to the S1000RR. The German marque is entering into the Superbike realm to get a slice of the Japanese-dominated pie. Citing an 85% share of the literbike market by the Big Four, Kuenheim acknowledged the ambitious nature of a BMW superbike entry.
"We naturally realize that we are taking on a great challenge," said Kueheim. "Particularly the Japanese are some 20 years ahead of us in this class and have lots of experience. But even so, the spirit of this competition alone encourages us in our efforts."

2009 BMW S1000RR Superbike

A four-cylinder literbike to give the Japanese a run for their money, BMW has high hopes for the S1000RR, expecting the new machine to be winning races in WSB by 2010.
The Motorrad prez went on to state the company expects to run in the top 10 during next year's championship and be contending for WSB victories by 2010.
As for the S1000RR spec sheet, Kueheim didn't go into detail saying, ""Since we are still in the middle of the development process, it would be too soon to mention any specific technical data."

But... We do know for sure it's a Four, with Kueheim promising "the engine will of course offer a number of special features, especially on the cylinder head." BMW's Duolever suspension is out, with a more traditional fork obvious up front. The BMW President also promised the new superbike would have "special traction control."

As to when the BMW S1000RR will be storming a road near you, don't expect it anytime soon. What we do know for certain is BMW has promised 1000 units will be produced by the end of 2009 to conform with WSB homologation rules.

Specifications: 2009 Piaggio MP3 500 Scooter

2009 Piaggio MP3 500 Scooter Motorcycle

The three wheel revolution progresses even further with the MP3 500. With aggressive styling and performance, the Piaggio MP3 500 is the three-wheeler for people who want to stand out. ‘Safe fun’ is no longer an oxymoron. Riding has never been this easy, enjoyable and secure. Two front wheels and a revolutionary parallelogram front suspension together with the new double ignition Master 500ie engine give the MP3 500 very racy performance while remaining exceptionally safe.

Design
The MP3 500’s innovative looks are striking. The front end of the MP3 500 has a decisive shape that expresses strength and character and hints at the incredible performance of the all-new 492cc single cylinder engine. The front two wheels are marked by a steel tube bumper with metal mesh inserts that give the vehicle a rugged look. The front design protects the rider and the mechanicals while putting the unique front suspension technology on display. Other touches are the sleek ‘naked’ metal handlebar and black ten-spoke wheel rims. The five-lamp headlight unit is not only striking to look at but highly effective as well; the two biggest lamps are equipped with off-road-style shockproof covers. The front fairing and front shield fairing offer remarkable aerodynamic protection. There is a wide, comfortable footrest panel behind the front shield fairing.

The tail design is stark and minimalist, a mix of plastics and tubes that picks up on the styling of the front with a very useful rear rack, while the wide, comfortable seat ensures total comfort for both rider and passenger thanks to its ergonomic design and negligible height difference between the two parts of the seat.

A thrilling ride
But there’s more than design to the personality of the MP3 500. The latest product from the Piaggio brand boasts top engine performance, ideally backed up by revolutionary running gear to provide astonishing ride quality. The Piaggio MP3 500 streaks away from traffic lights and takes all kinds of terrain in its stride, handling twisty mountain roads and long rides in all safety whatever the weather conditions thanks to its two front wheels commanded by an extraordinary parallelogram front suspension. This revolutionary technical set-up ensures impeccable road holding in all riding conditions, with stability and braking power that no conventional scooter can provide.

Technology
The steel tube frame conceals the powerful, reliable new Master 500 i.e. double ignition engine, a four-valve, four-stroke unit with electronic injection and liquid cooling. The capacity of the new Master engine has been upped to 492cc to obtain maximum power of 40 hp at 7,250 rpm and maximum torque of over 42 Nm at 5,500 rpm. The introduction of the twin spark system has also made it possible to optimize combustion inside the cylinder, with a reduction in noise and gas emissions. The result is a smooth, high-performance engine, very torquey at low and medium range rpm, that takes the Piaggio MP3 500 to a top speed of nearly 90 mph while fully respecting U.S. emissions standards thanks to the advanced closed loop injection circuit with a Lambda sensor and three-way catalytic converter in the exhaust pipe.

The engine’s power is skillfully managed by the sophisticated running gear. The innovative parallelogram front suspension’s tilt mechanism is composed of four cast aluminum arms, with four hinges fixed to the central tube and two guide tubes on either side of the parallelogram, connected to the arms via suspension pins and ball bearings. This means that the Piaggio MP3 500 is as easy to ride as a traditional scooter, while its incredible stability, especially when cornering and braking, comes from its two front wheels.

Standard equipment includes an electro-hydraulic front suspension locking system that keeps the MP3 500 upright without a central stand. This makes it extremely easy to park anywhere. What’s more, there’s no need to put your feet on the ground to keep your balance when stopped at a traffic light.

Optimal rear end stability is guaranteed by a 14” rear wheel with a generous 140/70 tire, while three 240mm disk brakes with dual-piston calipers ensure fast, efficient braking.

With its strong personality, aggressive design and cutting-edge technology, this three-wheeler is ready to ride into uncharted territory.

Innovation goes extreme in this MP3, with it’s 500cc, electronic injection Master engine.
The MP3’s revolutionary parallelogram front suspension ensures impeccable road holding in all riding conditions.
