Ducati 1198 Superbike Motorcycle 2009

2009 Ducati 1198 Superbike Motorcycle

The new DUCATI 1198, while maintaining the same look as the previous 1098, is in fact a totally new bike. The 1198, which produces a powerful 170hp (125kW) from its new Testastretta Evoluzione engine, and has a dry weight of just 171kg (377lb), incorporates all of the World Superbike technology derived directly from the 2008 World Championship winning race bike of Troy Bayliss.
The 1198 is powered by the powerful Testastretta Evoluzione, a liquid cooled, L-Twin, Desmodromic engine, the crowning glory of Ducati's development and perfection of the L-Twin engine, that produces 170hp (125kW) @ 9,750rpm and a class-beating 97lb-ft (13.4kgm) of torque @ 8,000rpm.
The 2009 Superbike range presents five models: The lightweight and agile 848, the awesomely powerful new 1198, and for those who demand the ultimate in specification, the 1198 S and 1098 R, both now with race-level Ducati Traction Control systems for the road. To mark his 3rd Superbike World Championship and to celebrate the career of Troy Bayliss, who will now retire from motorcycle racing, Ducati will build a 1098 R Bayliss Limited Edition.

The new 1198 Testastretta Evoluzione engine
The Testastretta Evoluzione engine is the crowning glory of Ducati's development and perfection of the L-Twin engine. World Superbike dominance for almost two decades is the result of continual commitment to their twin-cylinder configuration. Ducati now share the reward for that commitment as World Championship-winning technologies flow from the factory race team into production engines.
The incredible 1198 and 1198 S are powered by a liquid cooled, L-Twin, Desmodromic engine that produces 170hp (125kW) @ 9,750rpm and a class-beating 97lb-ft (13.4kgm) of torque @ 8,000rpm.
The 1198 achieves its new capacity by using exactly the same 106x67.9 bore and stroke as the factory race bike. Volumetric efficiency through the four valves per cylinder has been enhanced by increasing the valve diameters approximately 4% to 43.5mm for the inlet and 35.5mm for the exhaust. They are actuated by racing-type rocker arms, 'super-finished' for reduced friction and fatigue, and double overhead camshafts with radical profiles that achieve approximately 10% more lift than their predecessors.
These incredible valve performances are only possible because of Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valve to follow the steep closure profile of the cam lobe if it were relying upon a normal valve spring. With the Desmo system, the valve is closed mechanically with the same accuracy as it is opened, enabling steep cam profiles and radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati motorcycle including their world-beating Superbike and Desmosedici MotoGP bikes.
With increased capacity and improved volumetric efficiency, the elliptical throttle bodies have also increased in cross-sectional area by 13.3% compared to the 1098. Now boasting a size equivalent to 63.9mm diameter, the inlet body is exactly the same as the 'R' model.
The race-designed 1198 pistons have a distinctive double-ribbed undercrown to achieve high strength and reduced friction by using minimal piston wall surface area. Using technology developed for the Desmosedici MotoGP project, the design enables reliable operation of the 106mm diameter pistons when performing at high rpm.
The 1198 Testastretta Evoluzione engines are the lightest ever used in Ducati Superbikes, thanks to a new crankcase manufacturing technology which reduces weight by an incredible 3kg (6.5lbs). The vacuum die-cast process ensures consistent and precise wall thickness and increased strength from absolute material purity. The weight-saving cam covers in magnesium-alloy are evident by their gold colour, while the alloy outer clutch and generator covers now sport a black finish.
In line with the increased power and torque output, the 1198 gearbox introduces 'R' model internal ratios. The new gears are machined from the same high-strength steel used in Ducati Corse race applications and are subjected to a shot-peening treatment that further ensures their strength and reduced fatigue.
The 1198 and 1198 S feature a beautiful and efficient exhaust system. Incredibly lightweight, it has been engineered with a power-increasing symmetrical 2-1-2 layout that uses 52mm-57mm diameter tubing with a wall thickness of 0.8mm (.030in). It is equipped with a catalytic converter and two lambda probes for smooth engine mapping and Euro3 conformity. The system terminates with Ducati's trademark twin under-seat silencers, delivering that unmistakable signature sound of the big bore Desmo 90° L-Twin.

Ducati Hypermotard 1100 Sport Standard 2009

2009 Ducati Hypermotard 1100

The Hypermotard takes on urban canyons and mountain curves with total abandon. Its purpose is single-minded - to thrill.
The aggressive 'motard' styling and stance combine with Ducati 'Superbike' technology to deliver the best of both worlds. With a riding position that ensures total control, the exceptionally slim and incredibly light Hypermotard is ready to dominate every inch of asphalt with big-bore acceleration and dynamic road holding that redefines the street experience.
High performance starts with attitude and the Hypermotard is the most aggressive motorcycle in the Ducati family. Reduced to its essentials - it is extreme, untamed, over-the-top and always hungry for the next challenge. It offers what no ordinary supermotard can - speeds exceeding 125mph on the race track, fuel injection, and 90 Desmo hp - all combined in an unmistakable Ducati package offering unbridled passion for motorcycles that are truly unique and exhilarating.
The Road Ahead Sets the Challenge
When first unveiled the Hypermotard won instant praise. Just hours after its launch it was awarded "Best of Show" and motorcyclists the world over now understand why.
By taking the minimalist supermotard racing concept, then adding Ducati's unrivaled twin-cylinder power and Superbike technology, the Hypermotard delivers a remarkable experience. The Hypermotard 1100 is extreme and thrilling to ride every day of the week. It turns familiar roads into an all new heart-thumping experience.
Taking its attitude into the city or the mountains with a street smart confidence and no respect for conformity, the Hypermotard is ready for any challenge.
The Hypermotard 1100 is powered by the incredible Ducati two-valve, air-cooled, Desmodromic Dual Spark engine, giving it outstanding power delivery, from a grunt at low rpm to a singing howl at redline. The Hypermotard 1100 engine flexes its muscles with a 98mm bore and short 71.5mm stroke to make 90 horses and 76 pounds of torque.
Compact and purposeful, the Desmo Twin engine's light weight and narrow L-Twin layout, no wider than a single cylinder, ensures that the bike is lean and agile. The air-cooled design eliminates all the water radiators, hoses, valves, reservoirs and pumps, keeping the motorcycle's weight down to a minimum 390lb (177kg) and its lines clean and race-like.
Two spark plugs per cylinder, Dual Spark, optimises combustion temperatures and increases maximum power and torque throughout the rev range, enhancing reliability and reducing fuel consumption. Power is optimized with fuel injected into 45mm throttle bodies and a 2-1-2 exhaust system that exits high behind the rear of the saddle.
In keeping with its extreme character, engineers chose the Ducati 'dry' racing-style clutch for the Hypermotard, the popular choice of thousands of Ducatisti the world over.
With more experience and success with twin-cylinder high performance engines than any other manufacturer in the modern era; the air-cooled L-Twin remains central to Ducati's philosophy of motorcycling. This experience, plus constant investment in quality by design, advanced materials and engineering techniques, has enabled the distance between service intervals to increase to 7,500 miles (12,000km).

HYOSUNG GV250 ALPHA SPORT CRUISER MOTORCYCLE

HYOSUNG GV250 ALPHA SPORT CRUISER MOTORCYCLE

AlphaSports may be a relative newcomer to the cruiser market, but its GV250 Classic reveals a build quality on par with that of major OEMs. The bike has been manufactured by Hyosung Motors and Machinery Inc. in South Korea for the European and Asian market for several years—and now Hyosung builds the GV250 to AlphaSports' specifications for the U.S. market, too.

In classic cruiser fashion, the GV250 displays its 249cc engine with V-twin cylinders splayed 75 degrees apart. The technology's not all retro, though—each cylinder is fed by four valves operated by dual overhead cams, with two Mikuni carbs performing mixing duties. The entire valanced, low-slung package is held together by a tubular double-cradle chassis with an oil cooler hung just above the forward cylinder. Beefy, stacked shotgun exhausts allow spent gases to exit on the right.

The front fork is shrouded in chrome, and two preload-adjustable springs support a broad, well-padded saddle a mere 25 inches from the ground. The reach to the low, wide bar and a near upright seating position allows long in-saddle moments; good thing, too, since the 3.7-gallon fuel tank will have you on the road for close to 200 miles. A beefy (for this crew) 16-inch front wheel dons a 110/90-16 tire under what is arguably the largest front fender in the class. Not surprisingly, the rear fender is also the longest in the group. The bike rolls on tubeless, 150-series rear rubber that covers an aluminum-cast wheel—the widest here. A five-speed transmission smoothly engages a chain final drive.

The GV250 incorporates the fat-fendered style currently in vogue with cruisers, and the level of the Alpha's fit, finish and styling gets high marks. The wide handlebar and forward-placed footpegs put you in almost the same ergonomic position as, say, a Road Star. It looks brawny for a 250, but first-timers needn't be intimidated—the Alpha weighs in under 385 pounds.

Though cold-blooded at first crank, the mill elicits a pleasant twin-cylinder thrum once warmed. Normal throttle application with timely gear changes produces 60 mph without much effort, and on the road, all testers agreed that the unflappable Hyosung engine encouraged throttle-wringing. Riding this bike emphasized how roomy the cockpit was compared to the Japanese bikes—even our 6-footers felt at home with the Alpha's spread-out ergos, and long-time veterans were pleasantly surprised by its easy manners.

The same setup can create trouble in traffic, though. Two of the smaller testers needed time to get used to the weight of the handlebar, with its fat tire, at walking speeds. The single 10.4-inch front disc brake delivered good stopping power, but didn't provide much feedback—rookies felt its double-piston caliper was adequate in town, but larger and more experienced riders felt there was room for improvement.

On straightaways, the Alpha delivered its power without fuss through the gears, even at higher speeds, where three testers said they approached the 80 mph mark with very little complaint. A few riders commented that the fully equipped instrument cluster (speedo, tach, fuel gauge and idiot lights) was a welcome sight compared to the Japanese bikes' uniformly underwhelming instrumentation.

The Alpha may have a larger profile than the others, but save for a complaint about heavy steering, there was nothing but praise for the plump machine. Everyone agreed it was the only one that seemed like an "honest-to-goodness cruiser." Even as the second most expensive bike of the quintet at $3599, three out of five testers chose the Alpha as their pick for best all-around lightweight. Japan Inc. should take heed.

2010 Volkswagen Scirocco R TSI

2010 Volkswagen Scirocco R

The Volkswagen Scirocco R - conceptualized by Volkswagen Individual - is an impressive performance package with a brilliant engine and chassis, unique looks and exclusive features. Instead of the usual six-cylinder used so far in R-models of this segment, a boosted four-cylinder TSI is being used in the new VW Scirocco R. Its advantages: very high power and torque values with significantly reduced fuel consumption. On average, just 8.3 liters of super unleaded flows to the combustion chambers via direct injection per 100 kilometers of driving. That corresponds to CO2 emissions of 194 g/km - top values for a fast 250 km/h (electronically limited) sports car.
Volkswagen Scirocco fleet at the start in 24 hour race: Volkswagen plans to demonstrate once again at the 24 hour race just how much dynamic potential the Volkswagen Scirocco R possesses. An entire fleet of two-door cars, five cars altogether, will enter the marathon ride through the "Green Hell" there; all of them bear a close resemblance to the production vehicle, both technically and visually.
Gas in a literal sense: Three of the Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 versions are powered by a TSI gasoline engine with 315 PS. Two other VW Scirocco GT24 cars carry the additional CNG label, designating Compressed Natural Gas, because their TSI is fired with very cleanly combusting natural gas - an exception in car racing. The 300 PS Volkswagen Scirocco GT24-CNG cars have extremely low emissions. After winning and putting its stamp on the Dakar Rally with the Race Touareg powered by a fuel-efficient TDI (direct-injection diesel), Volkswagen is now taking up the issue of sustainability in the Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 as well - and emphatically - on the race course.
VW Scirocco R - from car racing to the street: This is not the Scirocco's first race of this type. This Volkswagen was shaking up the racing field on such occasions as far back as the 1970s. And in 2008, professionals the likes of Carlos Sainz and Hans-Joachim Stuck rocketed two VW Scirocco GT24 cars to a dual victory in its class. In 2009, things will be even more exciting. Because for the first time, the event offers an opportunity to take a good look at the street version of the racing cars in the form of the new Volkswagen Scirocco R. The first production cars will be produced later this year; with a manual six-speed transmission or - as in the Volkswagen Scirocco race vehicles - with the optional DSG 6-speed dual clutch transmission. Always aboard as standard equipment on the front-wheel drive vehicle: the XDS electronic transverse differential lock on the front axle for attaining optimal traction performance; this system was introduced for the first time on the new Volkswagen Golf GTI.

R-Drive - sports car engine
About one year after the market launch of the third generation Volkswagen Scirocco and the dual victory on the Nürburgring track, the new R-version is going to the starting line as what is certainly the most powerful production VW Scirocco ever built. To attain the very high specific power in the 2.0 TSI (97.5 kW / 132.5 PS per liter displacement), Volkswagen decided on a turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine known internally as the EA113.
More dynamic performance by clever downsizing: Like all TSI engines, the R-version too combines the efficiency of direct injection with the power of engine boosting. Despite downsizing the engine displacement and number of cylinders, the 1,984 cm3 sixteen-valve, four-cylinder engine develops significantly more power (+ 15 PS) and torque (+ 30 Newton-meter) than the six-cylinder engine of the most recent Volkswagen Golf R32. Specifically, the 2.0-liter TSI in the new VW Scirocco R attains a maximum power of 265 PS at 6,000 rpm. Its maximum torque - a hefty 350 Newton-meter - is available over an immense range of engine speed: 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. This makes for agile responsiveness of the engine, which is able to spontaneously summon torque in the blink of an eye in practically any speed range. The engine's acoustic output impressively underscores its special kind of power development. The exhaust system itself is designed as a double-flow system. Oval chrome tailpipes extend out from the bumper, one on the left and one on the right.
Engine of the Year for the Volkswagen Scirocco R: The in-line four cylinder, which has already earned four "Engine of the Year" awards, builds up its powerful torque via a turbocharger (up to 1.2 bar boost pressure) with intercooling. The engine, weighing in at just 152 kilograms, is controlled by fully electronic engine management with E-gas. The four cylinder's pistons have bolts with higher strength compared to less powerful versions. The connecting rods were also designed to be stronger, to reliably transmit the engine's high torque to the crankshaft. Because of the hefty engine forces that are generated, the cylinder block itself was reinforced as well.
All of this has a highly dynamic effect: The lightweight 1,333 kilogram VW Scirocco R needs just 6.0 short seconds for the intermediate sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear. It is precisely this type of driving, with a sensation of the build up to maximum torque that is "felt" right from idling, that distinguishes this sports car. It is an impressive, cool cruiser for every route and day of the year. Yet, those who downshift and give the car full throttle awaken a second side of the Volkswagen Scirocco R: a wild beast that sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, that is not electronically limited until it reaches 250 km/h and 6,320 rpm, and that accomplishes the classic 1,000 meter sprint in 25.9 seconds.
It is a given that this VW Scirocco will also have an optional dual clutch transmission (DSG). Those who choose the innovative 6-speed DSG will experience an even faster sprinting Volkswagen Scirocco R: the 100 km/h mark drops down to 6.4 seconds here. As is so often the case with a DSG, gains in dynamic performance (and comfort) are by no means purchased at the expense of fuel efficiency or emissions. In fact, the opposite is true, as demonstrated by its 8.2 liter average fuel consumption and 192 g/km CO2.

R-Chassis - sports car tuning

Volkswagen will launch the front-wheel drive VW Scirocco R with a specially tuned sport chassis and XDS electronic transverse differential lock as standard equipment. The latter refers to a functional extension of the electronic differential lock (EDS) that is integrated in the ESP system and eliminates any type of traction loss.
XDS compensates for understeer: As soon as the intelligent electronics detects unloading of the front wheel at the inside of a curve in fast curve driving, the ESP hydraulics applies braking pressure at this specific wheel to restore optimal traction. So, XDS acts like a transverse differential lock that compensates for the typical understeer of front-wheel drive cars in fast curve driving. The driving behavior of the already agile Volkswagen Scirocco R is made significantly more precise and neutral thanks to XDS.
Chassis layout from production: In front, the Volkswagen Scirocco R has a McPherson suspension for precise tracking and balanced comfort properties. In the rear, it is a four-link suspension that convincingly meets the challenge of achieving chassis tuning that is sporty yet comfortable.
DCC optimally resolves dilemma between comfort and dynamics: As an option, the VW Scirocco R will also be available with DCC Dynamic Chassis Control. This system continually adjusts damping of individual wheels to roadway conditions based on signals from three body sensors and displacement sensors for each wheel. During acceleration, braking and steering processes, chassis damping is stiffened in fractions of a second to optimally meet vehicle dynamic requirements. By making these automatic adjustments, DCC significantly increases comfort in driving situations that are less challenging dynamically, resolving the conflict in goals between a stiff sporty tuning and a comfortable one. Besides the "Normal" DCC mode, the driver can also choose the "Sport" or "Comfort" mode.
New R-wheel styling: Standard equipment includes newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels ("Talladega" type) with size 235/40 tires. An optional 19-inch version of the same wheel type is also offered. Both wheel-tire combinations support the maximum attainable transverse dynamics of the new sports car.
17-inch braking system for maximum deceleration: The braking system was also modified to handle the VW Scirocco R's higher level of driving performance. That is why a 17-inch system is used, instead of a 16-inch system; all four brakes have ventilated disks and R-specific brake calipers painted in glossy black. In front, the disks have a diameter of 345 millimeters, and in the rear 310 millimeters. The electronic stabilization program (ESP) was also modified. A new Sport mode can be selected by pressing the ESP button. This makes the ESP respond later in very fast driving on roads with lots of curves - e.g. on a race course - for handling that is even more agile. The electro-mechanical power steering of the Volkswagen Scirocco R was also given a sportier tuning curve.

R-Design - sports car look
Visually, many aspects of the Volkswagen Scirocco R follow the lead of the GT24, the VW Scirocco designed for car racing.
Front end with LED daytime running lights: The front end design reflects the motto "form follows function"; it has three large air inlets with large louvers in the specially designed Volkswagen Scirocco R bumper that engineers designed for optimal cooling of the brakes and engine. Integrated to the right and left of the outboard air inlets are newly designed and standard LED daytime running lights. The narrow, unique radiator grille screen is styled in a high-end glossy black. Here (as on the tailgate) the strongest VW Scirocco of all times can be identified by a new R-logo design that it sports in chrome on a black background. Providing for perfect illumination of the roadway, meanwhile, are standard bi-xenon headlights with integrated turn signal lights.
Rear end with double-flow exhaust system: Compared to all other production Sciroccos, the rear image of this car is dominated by a considerably larger roof edge spoiler and a prominent glossy black diffuser in the lower area of the bumper that shows typical R-design styling. Both of these components - diffuser and roof edge spoiler - reduce aerodynamic lift at the rear axle. Stylistically, the oval chrome tailpipes of the double-flow exhaust system are harmoniously integrated into the overall design of the rear. One tailpipe on the left and the other on the right define the border between the black diffuser and the bumper painted in car color. In addition, the taillights of the new Volkswagen Scirocco R were given a smoked tint.
Side profile with new R-wheels: The side view is characterized by powerfully styled side skirts painted in car color as well as new "Talladega" style alloy R-wheels in 18-inch format. The milled, polished wheels sport five sets of three spokes that are as visually unique and striking as the wheels of the Golf GTI ("Denver") and offer a very attractive view of the large 17-inch braking system with its glossy black calipers and R-logo. As an option, Volkswagen is also offering a 19-inch version of the "Talladega" wheels (named after a US race course). Like the brake calipers, the outside mirrors of the VW Scirocco R are always painted a glossy black, independent of the car color.
The interior of the new VW Scirocco R presents an altogether refined appearance. Like all R-models, specific interior accents, sport seats (optionally in leather) and numerous other dynamic features are applied. And indeed as standard equipment. Details of features distinguishing the Volkswagen Scirocco R from other versions with up to 200 PS power:
  • Sport seat system with seat covers in "Kyalami" fabric weave (named after the Formula-1 race course in South Africa), with R-Logo on the front head restraints in "Art Grey". Inner surface of contoured seat side supports has crystal gray microfibers.
  • Unique aluminum decor inserts in the instruments. High-gloss black accents in the center console area, door handles, gearshift grip, air vents and steering wheel spokes.

Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion TDI Concept Car

Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept Car

It is still a concept - the most fuel efficient five-seater in the world. Its name: Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept. Fuel consumption: 3.3 liters CO2 emissions: just 87 g/km! Likelihood of going into production: extremely high! However, before a potential production launch, development must be completed on the brand new 1.2 liter TDI with common rail injection. And that is precisely what the team led by Development Chief Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg is working on with great emphasis. "I anticipate," says Dr. Hackenberg, "that we will be able to go into production in February 2010. Meeting this schedule will be extremely demanding. Yet the engine and other systems of the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept are already operating with such promising performance that we are on course to meet our goal."

The "other systems" to which he refers include an automatic start-stop system and regenerative braking. These two technologies alone reduce fuel consumption of the 55 kW / 75 PS three-cylinder direct-injection diesel by up to 0.2 liters per 100 kilometers.

But that is not all that is being done. On the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept car, which weighs in at just 1,080 kilograms, Volkswagen is calling upon an entire array of efficiency measures, including an aerodynamic package for the Volkswagen Polo body that is lowered by 10 millimeters (including modified front end), an aerodynamically optimized underbody and low rolling resistance tires on 15-inch alloy wheels. Altogether, these modifications yield fuel savings totaling 0.8 liters. This has lowered CO2 emissions by about 20 percent.

Other features being presented on the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept car at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show include a custom interior with "Power On" trim, and a display for indicating upshifting and tire pressure. The design study is painted in the new exterior color "Emotion blue".

Start-stop system in detail
Especially worthwhile is a look at the fully intuitive operation of the start-stop system. As the driver approaches a red stop light in the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept car, he or she applies the brakes to bring the vehicle to a stop, shifts into neutral (which should be standard practice with a conventional car) and takes his or her foot off the clutch. This shuts off the engine momentarily. A "Start Stop" message now appears in the multifunctional display. As soon as the traffic light turns green again, the driver fully depresses the clutch, the engine starts, the "Start Stop" message disappears, and the driver puts the car back in gear and resumes driving.

Regenerative braking in detail
Regenerative braking helps to recover energy that would otherwise be lost in driving in as efficient a way as possible. During deceleration and braking phases of the Polo BlueMotion concept car - i.e. whenever the driver simply releases the accelerator pedal or intentionally brakes - the alternator's charging voltage is elevated, which converts the car's kinetic energy into electrical energy to charge the battery.

Thanks to alternator control - which regulates the alternator as a function of engine efficiency for optimal battery charging - it is possible to lower alternator voltage at other times, e.g. during acceleration or driving at a constant speed. It is even possible to switch off the alternator entirely. This reduces engine load and improves fuel economy. Special software for energy management and modified engine controller software are needed to utilize regeneration.

The new umbrella brand BlueMotionTechnologies
Volkswagen is presenting the Polo concept car in Geneva under the new umbrella brand "BlueMotionTechnologies". This label covers all production-mature or near-production technologies and products that significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. These are developments such as the new start-stop system and regenerative braking implemented on the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept, as well as the highly innovative SCR catalytic converter on the Passat CC BlueTDI that is also appearing for the first time in Geneva. However, they also include the NOx storage catalytic converter that has already been successfully introduced in the USA, electric and hybrid drive systems, and innovative engine systems like those in the Touran TSI EcoFuel which are debuting at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. A launching point for these extremely fuel efficient and low-emission products was the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion, which in 2006 was the first five-seater to bring fuel consumption down to 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers. The Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept car now surpasses this record value by 0.5 liters.

The range of BlueMotion models already available today includes the VW Golf series, Jetta, Caddy, Touran, Sharan, and the Passat and Passat Wagon. A recent survey by the organization "Deutsche Automobil Treuhand DAT", the renowned and world's oldest institution for automotive market research, demonstrates just how successful the BlueMotion label has become today. In a representative survey, the highly regarded DAT found that 85 percent of German car drivers are familiar with the BlueMotion label. The next best competitor only attained a recognition level of 36 percent. This makes BlueMotion the number 1 among automotive environmental labels.

2010 Fiat 500C Featuring An Innovative Softtop

2010 FIAT 500 C

Fiat 500C makes its debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, before its launch throughout Europe in the spring of 2009. Evocative of "freedom and emotion", this original 'cabriolet' pays homage to the open-top 1957 model whilst offering leading-edge solutions for mechanical units, powerplants and interior comfort. All this in authentic Fiat tradition giving access to higher segment engineering and technology hitherto unheard of.

Featuring an innovative softtop - a fully fledged window to the sky - the new Fiat 500C comes in the same size as the Fiat 500 basic model (3.55 m x 1.65 m x 1.49 m) and the same three powerplants: the 1.3 liter 75 HP Multijet Turbodiesel coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission and the two 1.2 liter 69 HP and 1.4 liter 100 HP gasoline engines, available with either manual or robotized Dualogic transmission. Providing different features, all three engine types are generously sized, have a brilliant temperament and offer high performance based on sophisticated technology. Standard features include stubborn reliability and environmental friendliness.

Moreover, as proof of Fiat Automobiles commitment to ecology and sustainable mobility, the new Fiat 500C incorporates the innovative "Start&Stop" system, a device controlling momentary engine shutdown and subsequent reignition. To this end, at every stop when shifting to neutral and releasing the clutch, the engine is switched off and then restarted simply by selecting a gear.

Created by the Fiat Styling Center and manufactured at the Tichy plant in Poland, the Fiat 500C is of the "open source" design, implying the addition of new functions to a highly successful existing product. Indeed, the Fiat 500C incorporates all the strong points of the basic model, namely top-of-segment safety features, 4-adult seat habitability and generous luggage space combined with excellent loadability also with the soft top fully open, thanks to a clever parallelogram hinge device.

A highly original exercise in design, the softtop of the Fiat 500C stands out for its refined electrically operated linkage and engineering solutions of great quality and finish, such as the glass backlight and the built-in center high mounted stop light. Available in three colors (ivory, red and black), this original soft top will be matched with several bodywork color schemes, two of which have been conceived specifically for the new car, i.e. a brilliant Pearl Red and a special Warm Grey typical of sports supercars. Last but not least, thanks to the adoption of the innovative sliding softtop combined with a styling concept which retains all-round protection, the Fiat 500C offers a delightful ride in any season of the year. All told, its many special features make this new car one of the best turned out cabriolet models currently on offer in the city-car segment.

The Fiat 500C is further proof of Fiat's undisputed leadership in this vehicle class where continuous innovation ensures that its position as the industry's standard is maintained. In fact the car sets new levels of in terms of comfort and safety, engineering and appointments whilst maintaining that unique and inimitable "Italian style". A new cabriolet is born which gives great excitement and utmost driving pleasure, combining captivating lines with the performance of flexible, environment-friendly engines.

2010 Opel Astra 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter Turbocharged

2010 Opel Astra 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter Turbocharged

Clearly influenced by the Insignia, the sixth generation Astra hatch is based on GM's new Delta platform that also underpins the Chevy Volt and Cruze models and it comes with a new set of engines including 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol units.
The new Astra is crucial for Opel as it will need to recover market share lost by the current model to Ford’s strong-selling Focus hatch as well as fend off the Fiesta compact. It may or may not see U.S. sale as a Saturn given that brand's uncertain future, but with Europe's love for hatches and the increasingly tight fuel and emissions standards - not to mention the taxes that go with them - the hatch will be key for Opel's sales at home.
The 2010 Astra will be based around GM’s Delta FWD compact platform and will once again be available in coupe, three and five-door hatchbacks and wagon, as well as a sedan in select markets. Since the Delta platform is shared with the Chevrolet Cruze, which will be built at GM’s Lordstown Ohio plant, there’s the possibility that the new Saturn Astra - or perhaps an Astra under one of GM's other brand banners - could also be manufactured in North America to keep costs low. There’s yet to be any official confirmation, however.

2010 Opel Astra 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter Turbocharged

European buyers of the Astra will be able to select from a broad selection of gasoline and diesel engines. Aside from an entry-level 1.4-naturally aspirated engine and the Insignia-derived 1.6-liter Turbo with 180HP, the Astra's petrol range will also include GM's new 1.4-liter turbocharged unit. It will be offered with outputs ranging from 120 hp to 140 hp and torque values of 175 to 200 Nm. General Motors says that the 1.4 Turbo engine will deliver fuel savings of up to 8 percent compared to the naturally aspirated 1.6 and 1.8-liter engines that it will replace.
The diesel range comprises of 1.3-liter, 1.7-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged units ranging from 95 to 160HP while Opel also plans to introduce an ecoFLEX version with low CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy sometime in 2010.
Apart from the hybrid, expect to see a similar powertrain lineup to the current model, which means a range of petrol engines developing between 75 and 240hp as well as a number of diesels with between 90 and 150hp.

2010 Opel Astra 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter Turbocharged

The new Astra is expected to go on sale in Europe following its debut at this September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Opel will also launch a new two-mode hybrid version although it won’t arrive until the end of 2010. Opel's own brand difficulties, including a partial sell-off of GM's interest, could slow development down, however.
And no, we do not know if the Astra will make it across the Atlantic and arrive in one form or another in U.S. showrooms due to the instability in GM's current situation and of course, the pending sale of the American automaker's stake in the Opel / Vauxhall brands.

Peugeot Prologue 3008 Hybrid Crossover Concept Car

Peugeot Prologue 3008 Hybrid Crossover Concept Car

Described by Peugeot as a model that is ‘derived from the fusion of different worlds’, the Prologue concept is essentially the pre-production version of the French carmaker’s long awaited 3008 crossover. And by crossover Peugeot means that the Prologue concept borrows features from both SUV and minivan (MPV) vehicles. The end result is a rather weird blend that looks vaguer than a cornered politician’s speech and a far cry from the elegant and stylish propositions we’re used to seeing from Peugeot.

This new, compact and spacious cross-over, represents a totally new offering in the UK car market. It is aimed at sport-loving couples, modern families, senior citizens and active young people who desire a type of car which does not fall into existing categories, such as hatchbacks and MPVs. Due to this positioning; it was perfectly natural that the project originally code named T84 should be called 3008.

* 3: places the car in the Peugeot’s compact medium range

* 00: the double zero designates a different and original design

* 8: specifies the generation within the current range

The 3008 is based on Peugeot’s short wheelbase platform 2, which was chosen due to its exceptional rigidity and excellent acoustic and vibration properties.

The 3008 structure has been carefully designed to provide maximum secondary safety as well as provide a structure with the same level of rigidity of that of a saloon. To reduce emissions and, therefore fuel consumption and running costs, the weight of the vehicle was kept to a minimum.

To help reduce the vehicle’s weight, laser welding was used instead of normal spot welding, the front overhang was kept to a minimum by the introduction of an innovative new type of impact absorber, a number of light weight materials were used and the thickness of the panoramic glass roof has also reduced to just 5 mm, while still retaining the same levels of safety as current roofs fitted to the 308 SW etc.

Hybrid 4 Technology

This name describes the hybridisation of a traditional engine with an electric motor, in an original layout in engineering terms that also allows the possibility of four wheel drive.

While the traditional engine is located as usual under the bonnet and drives the front wheels, the electric motor is located under the load area floor adjacent to the rear suspension. This technology not only represents a real breakthrough in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions (a reduction of around 35%), but also in terms of four wheel drive.

At the Paris Motor Show, the Prologue Hybrid 4 concept car was presented with a 2.0 litre HDi FAP engine with a power of 163 bhp and an electric motor with a maximum capacity of 37 bhp providing a maximum torque of 300 Nm at the front and 200 Nm at the rear. Despite this performance, its fuel consumption in the combined cycle is only 4.1 litres / 100 km, with CO2 emissions of just 109 g/km!

This technology makes it possible to combine dynamic performance with respect for the environment, while at the same time maintaining the benefits of a spacious vehicle.

Another important benefit is that there are no mechanical connections between the front diesel engine and the rear electric motor, everything is controlled electronically “by-wire”. This avoids any architectural constraints affecting the interior space and style of the passenger compartment.

The HYbrid 4 technology, which is still under development, was incorporated into the T84 programme from the very outset, since it is fully consistent with the approach adopted for the vehicle. In accordance with the announcement made at the Paris Motor show, the 3008 will be the Group’s first vehicle to be equipped with Hybrid 4 technology. The commercial launch of this four wheel drive hybrid cross-over is planned between now and 2011.

Peugeot Prologue 3008 Hybrid Crossover Concept Car

Styling

At the front, the Peugeot design genes have evolved to match the car’s generous volumes while still setting it apart from what has gone before. The streamlined headlamps are expressive in a new and original way, both dynamic and reassuring. The single front grille helps create the effect of a luxury off-roader, with a look reminiscent of the world of the SUV. At the rear, the wings with their structured curves blend smoothly with the ruby coloured rear lights with their hi-tech finish, indicating the presence of light emitting diodes. The use of a split rear tailgate as on the 4007, further illustrates the “Outdoor” spirit of the 3008.

Inside the 3008

The driving position of the 3008, resembles in many ways that of an aircraft’s cockpit, as it is truly designed for the user in mind. The fascia is uncluttered and elegant allowing a particularly good view of the outside.

The use of high quality materials throughout the interior creates an undisputable high level of perceived quality, both visually and to the touch. According to the particular version, above the centre console incorporating the air conditioning and audio or telematics controls, the driver could have at their disposal a series of toggle switches that control two new systems. The “Head Up Display” and “Distance Alert” system, both features further contribute to the aeronautical feel of the driving position.

The roomy passenger compartment ensures comfort for every occupant. The passenger like the driver benefits from a raised seating position. In addition, rear passengers have ample leg room, helped by the interior passenger compartment length of 1,690 mm and rear headroom of 876 mm.

By day, occupants also benefit from the light coming from the large glazed area, including 1.70 m2 from the front windscreen. An optional or standard glass panoramic roof is also available with a surface area of 1.60 m2, virtually equivalent to that of the 308 SW.

The 3008 benefits from the most efficient air conditioning unit fitted to a platform two vehicle. The high volume air flow is distributed by four individual vents mounted in the fascia panel, heating ducts for the feet of the front rear occupants, and two adjustable vents for the rear passengers. Two levels of air conditioning are available: manual or automatic. The latter can be adjusted individually by each of the front occupants and benefits from a new feature, the Air Quality Sensor (AQS). This function, linked to an air quality sensor located upstream of the passenger compartment air intake, automatically controls the closure of the air recirculation flap if a high level of outside pollution is detected.

Inside the 3008 offers occupants nearly 50 litres of storage space, three 12v power connections and according to the version, the rear occupants can also benefit from side sun-blinds and / or dark tinted windows.

The 3008 benefits from an accessible and intelligent load space. Access is made easy by the split tailgate of which the lower tailgate flap can become a seat or be used to support a weight of 200 kg. Inside the load area floor can easily be compartmentalised thanks to the cleverly designed floor with its three adjustable positions. The load area has a constant width of 1,030 mm and a capacity of 512 litres or 1604 litres with the rear seats folded. On certain models the load area interior light is also a rechargeable portable torch as in the 308 SW.

To assist the driver the 3008 can be equipped with a “Head Up Display” which communicates all essential information such as vehicle speed, cruise control/speed limiter and distance alert information. The Distance Alert coupled with the “Head Up Display” uses a special radar to help the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Available as standard on all engines, the 3008 is fitted with an electric parking brake enabling additional storage space to be created in the centre console. Combined with the electronic handbrake the 3008 is also available with Hill Assist for greater convenience and safety.

Directional bi-xenon headlamps, front and rear parking assistance, variable speed limiter / cruise control, tyre under-inflation detection, electric folding door mirrors, automatic headlamps / wipers and the full range of Peugeot’s in-car entertainment and telematics systems are all available on the 3008.

Suspension

Front suspension consists of an inverted pseudo McPherson design with a linked anti-roll bar, a technology that provides rigorous control and a good level of vibration filtering. The rear suspension consists of a rear torsion beam, two rear suspension arms and an integral anti-roll bar, compacted and offering excellent rigidity and body stability. The shock absorber are designed and produced by Peugeot to ensure a high level of road holding and comfort.

On versions fitted with the two highest performance engines (1.6 litre THP petrol engine and a new 2.0 litre HDi FAP diesel engine) an all new Dynamic Roll Control system has been developed. The system, appearing for the first time in this segment of the market, further enhances the dynamic qualities of the 3008 while still retaining a high level of comfort.

The “Outdoor” abilities of the 3008 are further strengthened through an innovative traction control system, Grip Control. The system consists of an upgraded traction control system with five operation modes and special mud and snow tyres. The driver is, therefore, able to optimise the traction of both front wheels, enabling the vehicle to have a genuine ability to overcome difficult situations where the wheels have little grip.

Braking is assured by large 283 x 16 mm ventilated discs on 1.6 VTi and 1.6 litre HDi FAP versions and 302 x 26 mm discs on other models. Rear brakes are 268 x 12 mm solid discs and ESP is fitted as standard which includes traction control, hill assist, stability control, ABS, electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assist.

Electro-hydraulic power steering is fitted to all models, which varies the assistance according to the speed of the car, speed of rotation of the steering wheel and the temperature of the power steering fluid.

The 3008 will be available with 16”, 17” and 18” wheels and both the 16” and 17” wheel options will be available with low rolling resistance tyres.

Power-train Options

Six power train options will be available between launch and the autumn of 2009.

  • 1.6 litre THP: 150 bhp – six-speed manual gearbox
  • 1.6 litre VTi : 120 bhp – five-speed manual gearbox

Safety

The 3008 benefits from the Group’s extensive experience and the use of the latest technology to provide the best possible protection for all its occupants. The structure and restraint systems are designed to achieve a five star rating under the new 2009 EuroNCAP standards. Six airbags are available combined with five three-point inertia reel seatbelts and an audible fasten seat belt warning system. The two outer rear seats are also fitted with Isofix child seat mountings.

The 3008 range will go on sale in the UK at the end of 2009 and more information concerning specification and prices will be announced nearer the launch date.

FERRARI FXX : The Most Advanced GT Ever Created

FERRARI FXX

The FXX is the most advanced GT ever created at Maranello. With this car, Ferrari aims to develop the skills of their most valued Clients to the level of genuine Ferrari Test Drivers.

Powered by an imposing 6,262 cc V12 engine, the FXX can punch out over 800 hp at 8,500 rpm. Its highly responsive gearbox is the result of the transfer of Formula 1 strategies, delivering gear-change times of less than 100 ms. This is almost as fast as Formula 1 single-seaters, themselves the absolute pinnacle of current technological achievement.

What really sets the FXX apart, however, is its sophisticated telemetry system, which monitors and provides feedback on 39 different vehicle dynamic parameters in real time. This information can then be analysed by Ferrari technicians working on the programme, who will then discuss their findings with the individual Client Drivers to ensure that the car is kept constantly updated.

Each Client who signs up for the FXX programme when they purchase one of these supercars automatically becomes a part of Team Ferrari – their driving is monitored by Ferrari specialists and technicians. The data and driving experience gathered during this programme is then compared against that of current Formula 1 team members and Ferrari's professional in-house Test Drivers.

Technical specifications

The FXX is the fruit of Ferrari's know-how in building special, limited-series sports cars combined (of course) with its racing experience. The car will provide the basic framework on which the specifics of future extreme models will be worked out. The exceptionally powerful FXX delivers absolutely blistering performance on all fronts. The FXX has not been homologated for road use, and thus will not be a competition model. It will be used exclusively on the track as part of a specific ongoing research and development programme, featuring this first-ever group of Client Test Drivers. The FXX is powered by an imposing 6,262 cc V12 engine that can punch out over 800 hp at 8,500 rpm. Its gearbox is the result of the transfer of F1 strategies, delivering gear-change times of under 100 ms. This is almost as fast as the F1 single-seaters, themselves the absolute pinnacle of current technological achievement. The FXX's aerodynamic design is particularly innovative too, resulting in a shape that produces 40% higher down-force than ever achieved before. It is also possible to adjust the FXX's mobile spoiler configuration to suit the specific circuit.

Aprilia Sportcity Cube 250 Scooter 2009

Aprilia Sportcity Cube 250 Scooter 2009

Aprilia is looking to capitalize on a ballooning demand for commuter smart scooters with the release of its SportCity Cube 250. The 2009 SportCity has refined what was already a popular package for Aprilia, adding a bit more usability and performance to the big-wheeled scooter. The bike sports an even larger luggage rack with improved grab handles for passenger convenience, and has added an outlet for cell phone recharging to its already clever lockable glove compartment. Aprilia has also expanded the dimensions of the under seat compartment for even more stowing space.

A hearty 224cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine is called upon to haul around all this new found equipment along with a rider or two, and should prove suitably quick for around town runs and medium length commuting with its 22.5 horsepower and over 16 pound-feet of torque. The clean-burning engine is likely to be suitably frugal on fuel bills, though no official consumption information has been released.

The SportCity Cube 250 retails for $4699, not an insubstantial sum where motor scooters are concerned, but cheap enough that it should still be in the wheelhouse for those looking to seriously cut costs in their urban-oriented budgets.

Features:
  • Removable paint finish top box This capacious 35 litre removable top box features a matching painted lid plus an exclusive “Sportcity” chrome plate.
  • Removable New Concept top box A removable, 32 litre top box in textured black finish.
  • Fixed top box with backrest Fantastic functionality from such a compact top box. This classic fixed top box with a painted lid incorporates a comfortable and safe passenger backrest. Capacity 28 litres.
  • Leg cover This lightweight and comfortable waterproof leg cover helps keep you dry in bad weather.
  • Large windshield This large windshield integrates perfectly with Sportcity’s overall look and offers enhanced weather protection.
  • Sports windshield This more compact and aerodynamic sports windshield is the perfect compromise between stylish looks and protection against the elements

2009 Honda Ruckus NPS50 Scooter SOHC

2009 Honda Ruckus NPS50

The Ruckus caused a, well...ruckus when it was first introduced, with an exoskeletal chassis that didn't resemble anything else and the look of a rough-and-ready utilitarian unafraid of getting dirty. It uses a clean, quiet, 49cc four-stroke single-cylinder engine to propel its claimed 194 pounds of mass. It rolls on strong cast-aluminum wheels with dual-sport-ish tires. That sturdy sensibility even extends to the easy-to-clean textured-rubber floormats that look rugged enough for camping or hunting.

It's light and nimble, but not very fast, and neither is it in a hurry to get to its 40-mph top speed. After taking some major thoroughfares on the way to work, I was convinced the side-street-shuffle was the way to get where I needed to go. With that tactic, the Ruckus was perfect for my four-mile ride to the beach; I could weave my way through slower side streets almost all the way. Once there, parking was never an issue for me; I could always find a spot and pop the Ruckus onto its centerstand. In the worst case, I would just stick it into a bike rack. Wetsuit, towel and work clothes fit nicely under the seat, and the bare-bones design makes the Ruckus easy to clean. [Mark Cernicky]

Engine/Drivetrain
  • Lightweight 49cc four-stroke OHC liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine provides ample power for in-town riding.
  • Fuel-sipping constant-velocity (CV) carburetor with automatic choke.
  • Maintenance-free ignition system.
  • Starter system utilizes the engine's brushless alternator (ACG) for starting, eliminating the need for a separate starter motor. This simple design requires no maintenance and further reduces overall weight for even better fuel economy.
  • Electronic Control Unit (ECU) provides control for ignition timing, alternator regulator, ACG starter, electric fuel pump and automatic choke.
  • Lightweight, maintenance-free, magnetically driven water pump eliminates the need for mechanical seals.
  • Compact, engine-mounted radiator has aluminum fins for optimal cooling in all riding conditions.
  • Electromagnetic fuel pump is located adjacent to the fuel tank under the floorboard of the Ruckus.
  • Ultra-quiet exhaust system.
  • Automatic Honda V-Matic belt-drive transmission provides spirited acceleration and smooth operation.
Chassis/Suspension
  • Two-piece, die-cast aluminum front frame with upper steel rear frame.
  • Twin-downtube-fork front suspension provides 2.2 inches of plush travel for a well-controlled ride.
  • Single-side aluminum swingarm with single-shock rear suspension has 2.6 inches of travel for a compliant, comfortable ride.
  • Front and rear drum brakes offer predictable stopping.
  • Oversize tires offer a secure grip on the road.
Additional Features
  • Well-padded seat boasts a low 28.9-inch seat height for added confidence at stops.
  • Instrumentation includes analog speedometer, odometer and indicator lights for fuel, coolant temperature and low/high beams. Fuel-indicator light comes on with 0.3 gallon remaining.
  • Audible turn-signal indicator.
  • Parking brake.
  • Helmet holder locks helmet into place under seat.
  • Backup kickstart lever.
  • Dual headlights with two 35-watt bulbs. Low/high beams provide ample nighttime illumination.
  • Maintenance-free battery.
  • Transferable one-year, unlimited-mileage limited warranty; extended coverage available with a Honda Protection Plan.

FERRARI 599XX : Prototype Of An Extreme Track Car

FERRARI 599XX

While based on the 599 GTB Fiorano ,with the same transaxle layout and engine type, this prototype is an extreme track car. Ferrari's engineers have carried out extensive work on the engine's combustion chambers and inlet and exhaust tracts. These modifications, combined with the fact that internal attrition has been reduced and the maximum revs have been boosted to 9,000 rpm, helped achieve the target power output of 700 hp at 9,000 rpm. Particular attention was also paid to cutting the weight of the engine unit components. This was achieved both by optimising forms – as in the new crankshaft – and adopting exclusive materials, as in the carbon-fibre used for the intake plenums. A new gearbox shift strategy cuts overall gear-change times to 60 ms.

The 599XX is characterised by an innovative electronic concept called the 'High Performance Dynamic Concept', which has been designed to get maximum performance from the car by managing the combination of the car's mechanical limits with the potential of its electronic controls. The mechanical and electronic systems work together to get the maximum performance from the car under extreme high performance driving, for consistent lap times. The sporty handling has been improved thanks to the adoption of second generation SCM suspension system. Track usage is also made easier thanks to the new 'virtual car engineer', a screen in the car that provides a real-time indication of the vehicle's efficiency.

The 599XX's aerodynamics were honed in numerous Wind Tunnel test sessions with the result that the car now boasts 280 kg of down-force at 200 km/h (630 kg at 300 km/h). The front underside of the body is completely faired-in and the vents that channel hot air from the engine bay have been moved to the bonnet.

FERRARI 599XX

The 'Actiflow™' system increases down-force and/or cuts drag, depending on the car's trim cornering conditions, courtesy of the use of a porous material in the diffuser and two fans in the boot, which channel the air flow from under the car out through two grilles next to the tail lights. Winglets have been added to the rear buttresses to increase downf-orce, while synthetic jets have also been incorporated into the rear of the car to control and smooth the air flow and to reduce drag. Ferrari's engineers have also used F1-derived 'doughnuts', which partly cover the brake discs and wheel rim. These have the dual functions of improving aerodynamics and cooling the brakes.

In terms of the bodywork, composites and carbon-fibre have been widely used and the engineers drew on their experience in working with aluminium to reach the weight target. The development of increasingly high-performance materials has also benefited the carbon-ceramic braking system. The brake pads are now made from carbon-fibre, which means the callipers are smaller while guaranteeing the same efficiency. The new racing carbon-ceramic braking system also delivers shorter braking distances and is generally more efficient due to the weight saving.

The 599XX comes with slick tyres (29/67 R19 front and 31/71 R19 rear), specifically developed to maximise stability in cornering and increase lateral acceleration. They are fitted to 19 x 11J wheel rims at the front and 19 x 12J at the rear. [Ferrari.com]
